Resin buildup is the biggest reason a good piece of glass starts hitting harsh, tasting burnt, or losing airflow. The fix isn't complicated, and you don't need anything you can't pick up the same time you're in the shop. Here's the method that works on hand pipes, bubblers, and full water pipes alike.
What you'll need
- Isopropyl alcohol (91% or higher works faster than 70%)
- Coarse salt (Epsom salt or coarse kosher salt — the texture is what scrubs the resin loose)
- A container or resealable bag big enough to submerge the piece
- Pipe cleaners or cotton swabs for tight spots
- Warm water for rinsing
Step by step
1. Empty and rinse
Dump out any standing water and give the piece a quick rinse so you're not diluting your alcohol with old water.
2. Add salt and alcohol
Plug any openings (a downstem hole, a mouthpiece) with your fingers or a cap, then add a couple tablespoons of salt followed by enough isopropyl alcohol to cover the resin-stained areas.
3. Shake it out
Seal it up and shake gently for a few minutes. The salt acts as an abrasive while the alcohol dissolves the resin. For pieces with stubborn buildup, let it sit for 20–30 minutes and shake again.
4. Rinse thoroughly
Rinse with warm water until the alcohol smell is gone and the water runs clear. This step matters — you don't want leftover alcohol or salt residue.
5. Dry completely
Let it air dry fully before your next session.
How often should you clean?
As a rule of thumb: a quick rinse after every few uses keeps things from building up in the first place, and a full alcohol-and-salt clean every 1–2 weeks with regular use keeps flavor and airflow where they should be. If you notice a burnt taste creeping in, that's usually your sign it's time.
A few safety notes
- Work in a ventilated space — isopropyl fumes shouldn't be inhaled in a closed room.
- Keep cleaning supplies away from kids and pets.
- Skip boiling water on thinner glass; sudden temperature changes can crack it.
- Never leave alcohol soaking near an open flame.
